Advent

So it's that time of year again and we can all scramble to get our advent calendars on display. In this house - we have three, not one each but all of them for Josh! We have a wooden Father Christmas with red felt pockets which are filled with chocolates, a bog standard celebrations chocolate calendar and our very favourite advent village. This is the village where I would love to live. It has a warm and cosy church, a huge christmas tree, small cottages, grand houses and of course the best toyshop in the whole wide world. We have had this little calendar since Josh was about two - and he's thirteen in March. Still he insists that this little village comes out every year and is built in the lead up to Christmas Day. No chocolate, no sweets, just the pleasure of seeing each sweet little building arrive in the village with its frozen village pond (good for skating) and its copious amounts of snow (perfect for building snowmen).

I'll try to show you the village as it is built, some of the residents who live there and the house I would choose for myself.

Christmas Treats

Despite knowing that I've bought an awful lot of magazines this month, Rob has indulged me by surprising me with two gorgeous Christmas books. I've been drooling over this one in the shops for several weeks but at the price of £25 thougt it was far too expensive to buy at this time of year. Fortunately The Book People came to the rescue with the bargain price of £10 and it was in my eager mitts within a few days. It is full of gorgeous ideas for decorating with flowers

A less familiar book was this one, although equally lovely and well laid out. It is full of ideas for decorations, food, table decorations and making presents. The theme throughout is a 'green' Christmas and thrifty ideas for homemade gifts.

I look forward to finding something to read at Christmas. Rob always insists that the has to read a Dickens novel at Christmas. For me, well for some reason Harry Potter always makes me feel Christmassy but this year I think I will indulge myself with something seasonal from Miss Read. I think my great treat this Christmas on t.v. will be a feature length Christmas edition of Lark Rise to Candleford. It is my one weakness!

Back on Form

The December issue of Country Living is published and all's well. I've been a little worried of late about my beloved CL and its contents. Maybe because I'm a sad old woman and I've bought every copy ever published, I have become set in my ways and cannot accept change. However, in the last few months there has been too much of a sixties and seventies influence for me and not enough pretty floralness. There I've said it....it has been a'bit off' recently. This month it is back to sparkling form and is the best of the Christmas issues I've bought so far this year.



Fellow blogger Michele over at Cowboys & Custard is also featured in Emporium this month. Pop over and take a look at her box frames filled with vintage finds.

This weekend we took a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon to begin the dreaded shopping. I can bear Christmas shopping if I'm somewhere civilised and pretty and not congested. Stratford is one of the larger places I enjoy visiting...for this shop in particular.



This shop is lovely at any time of year and is full of goodies by Greengate, Yankee Candles and all sorts of Christmas themed goodies. This next shop is also good for a tasty treat for yourself.



I did manage to control myself in these two shops but I did come away with a new winter coat from elsewhere. After a pub lunch we moved on to Broadway for Afternoon Tea and a browse around its lovely shops.Pretty as always but even more attractive in the twilight just as the lights are beginning to come on.

Time for Tea

Hi everyone. It seems an age since I last blogged - motivation and inspiration just seems to have left me for the moment! Time to get back into the swing of things methinks. With it being half term and Josh being at home I do get special requests to cook his favourite things - none of which involve vegetables or fruit or anything healthy of course. I think his all time favourite treat comes from one of my all time favourite cookbooks which you can see above. It's a very slender volume, of around 40 pages which I bought in an art gallery when in Alston in Cumbria a few years ago. It is a compilation of recipes from tea rooms (my one weakness) located all over Britain and includes such delights as Mocha Slices, Border Jock, Cappucino Wedges and Dorset Apple Cake and gives a little information about the tea room that has contibuted the recipe. Josh's very favourite has to be Nanaimo Bars - an unusual very sweet confection and very easy to make - no ovens involved. You will need...

First Layer
4oz butter
1 1/2 oz caster sugar
3 level tsp cocoa
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla essence
6oz crushed digestives
2oz dessicated coconut
2oz chopped walnuts

Second Layer
2oz butter
9oz icing sugar
2 level tbsp custard powder
3 tbsp boiling water

Third Layer
3oz plain chocolate
1 1/2 oz butter
1 1/2 tsp icing sugar


To make the first layer melt butter, sugar and cocoa in a small pan, over a gentle heat and stir until melted.



Add beaten egg and vanilla essence and cook for 1 minute without boiling. Remove from the heat.



Add bicuits, coconut and walnuts, give it a good stir and put into a greased tin that's about 10in by 6in. Refrigerate for 1 hour.



To make the second layer. Sieve icing sugar, add custard powder, butter and boiling water and mix until smooth. Spread over the first layer and refrigerate for a couple of hours. Complete the third layer by melting the chocolate and butter. Stir in the icing sugar and spread over the top. Leave bars to chill until firm, cut into slices and enjoy.

The Last of Summer

This weekend was a time for making the most of the weather as we prepare for the cold days ahead. These nasturtiums are probably some of the last to be picked as they make way for the little nodding faces of winter pansies. I love the colours of nasturtiums, so they were swiftly brought indoors to sit on the kitchen scales and provide something pretty to look when washing up.


It seems that everyone is beginning to cosy up now and many of the blogs that I have been reading have been showing off their crochet blankets and cushions. So I think I might as well join in. Now, I can't crochet or knit so I have had to rely on some lovely charity shop finds. To be honest the wool would have cost far more than I paid for either of them and they were both unused.


The smaller, bright blanket is living on the end of the chaise ready to be whipped off to cover chilly feet.



I thought it was quite unusual to find a blanket that was colour co-ordinated and this larger green blanket is just right at the bottom of our bed.




Here's to gorgeous Autumn days and to cosying up on the sofa with hot chocolate and marshmallows on chilly evenings. (Green and Black's Hot Choc of course!)

That Friday Feeling

I love Fridays. After twenty-odd years of working Fridays it is now my day. O.K I do need to go supermarket shopping and there is usually some ironing that needs attending to but it still feels as though I begin the weekend a day early. It is also the day when I can have an hour to myself browsing the local shops and today the charity shops came up trumps. This was the scene on my dining table five minutes after I arrived home this morning.


And this is how they all looked after a wash and scrub up.



Best of all the whole lot came to less than £4.50. The bargain of the day has to be the plate which came in at an astounding 99p and I adore anything decorated with violets or pansies. I feel pretty pleased with myself I can tell you!

Just to finish the day off and complete my feeling of elation, this little beauty dropped onto my doormat at lunctime.

All I need now is a bar of Green & Blacks white chocolate and my joy is complete.

Someone turn off the taps

That's it I give up! All the way through this dreadful summer I've remained optimistic and told myself that the weather really can't get any worse and it really won't prevent me from doing what I want . Well today it has. I can't even be bothered to walk into town to buy a new copy of Country Homes (my one weakness). Instead the doors and windows remain firmly shut and sod the calories the Duchy Originals are coming out of the cupboard. This week the rain has really got to me and I'm beginning to resent the sight of my waterproof jacket.(I'm really losing the plot now). This morning will be spent talking to you lovely ladies and keeping myself cosy with tea and biscuits. I promise I'll stop moaning now. By the way, I have to thank Lisa at Knitty, Vintage and Rosy for sending me the luscious glossy magazine in the photo. I shall really enjoy luxuriating in its elegant interiors.

At the risk of boring everyone I do have some more photos of Cornwall. I really would like to show you Trevarno Gardens. If you are ever near Helston they are well worth a visit. They are not overly large and a leisurely walk around them doesn't make you feel like you've been on an outward bound course.





Once you have wandered around the gardens you can relax in beautiful conservatory tea rooms where they serve locally produced food.

And if you have the energy after a huge cream tea then you really must visit the soap museum and the National Museum of Gardening housed on the site. The museum is full of wonderful adverstiisng signs

Organic beauty products are also produced and on sale there, so there really is a lot of interest for your visit.
